SENTRY research is focused on creating a system of sensors and other technologies to detect, deter, delay, and mitigate attacks on mass public gatherings, at a fraction of the cost to government and industry. SENTRY endeavors to secure schools, safeguard mass transit systems against violent perpetrators, and secure stadiums, arenas, and crowded places from mass terrorist attacks.
Center OverviewSENTRY’s research structure ties the technical challenges of protecting soft targets and crowded places to four fundamental research areas: Real-Time Management of Threat Detection and Mitigation; Advanced Sensing Technologies for Threat Awareness; Threat Risk Assessment, Prediction, and Deterrence; and Layered Security Architectural Design and Simulation. SENTRY works closely with industry leaders and experts to augment SENTRY research and expedite the transition of technology. By directly engaging and partnering with security stakeholders in each venue type, researchers aim to develop informed, pragmatic solutions.
Research Project PortfolioSENTRY research aligns with the DHS’s primary priorities of securing and managing air, land, and maritime borders, and expediting lawful trade and travel. The center also supports secondary research priorities of threat characterization, detection, and mitigation, as well as emergency response and critical infrastructure for public safety. SENTRY seeks to maximize the likelihood that its research results, including tools, technologies, and knowledge products, transition to DHS components and soft target crowded places security stakeholders.
